"ACC.USE: to make public the knowledge of an old friend's sin, most commonly as a justification of ourselves for having wronged him." - Ambrose Bierce, The Devil's Dictionary (JP/EN) First things first: there are TWO groups referred to as "ACCUSER" in this story. One is the regular ACCUSER, and the other is the "real ACCUSER." The two are completely different groups, but you'll see why they're both called ACCUSER. The name ACCUSER does appear to be taken from The Devil's Dictionary, written in 1911 by Ambrose Bierce. The definition I've quoted above comes from a combination of the English and Japanese versions of the dictionary - the definition doesn't fit this story otherwise. ;;^^ The first ACCUSER appears to be a government agency of some sort that investigates the paranormal. *whistles the X-Files theme* When they get ahold of Harry, they give him a full body scan, presumably take blood samples, and keep him in a straitjacket under heavy sedation at all times. So they're a charming bunch of people. The people I can keep track of are: The second ACCUSER, the "real" one, is brought up by Kate when Harry's powers suddenly skyrocket and he's able to blow up things far beyond his own powers, or even Ginori's. Kate explains that at the end of the Cold War, a certain project involving the use of psychokinetics for intelligence work or assassinations was shut down. Apparently they used some drugs on the psychics which had extremely painful and severe side-effects. This project became classified, and the CIA split up the remaining psychics and put them under observation. They were afraid of the powers of the psychics, so the majority were stored in a vegetative state in some secret location. Kate says that Stanley had been searching for the location of this storage facility - and he'd located it under the country cabin where Harry spent a day with Ginori. So in this case, the "real ACCUSER" were these trapped psychics, who were still alive but unable to act physically to gain revenge on those who'd betrayed and used them. They were able to send out their minds - hundreds of psychics - and they all entered Harry at once, possessing him and trying to use him as a conduit for their revenge. Ginori seems to have been one of these trapped psychics; when she goes into the basement of the house, there's a sleeping container with her name on it. |
