  • EBISU - (Japanese) Hiruko, the first son of the two creator gods Izanami and Izanagi, was born with some kind of physical disability (which they blamed on the fact that his mother had taken too active a role in his creation). His parents set him adrift on the ocean in a reed boat, but when he washed ashore on a beach, the people welcomed him as one of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune, and he was from then on called Ebisu, the God of Fishing, Good Harvests, and Good Fortune. He is especially worshipped by fisherman and businessmen. (There's a beer called Yebisu, the old way of spelling the word Ebisu. And the can has a picture of a fisherman on it. It's the best of the Japanese beers, IMO.)
  • ELIGOS - (European) Eligos, also known as Abigor, takes the form of a mounted nobleman carrying a lance, a standard, or a scepter. He is a grand duke of hell and commands sixty legions of the infernal army. He knows of the secrets of warfare and can instruct leaders of the ways to earn their soldiers' respect. He also is supposed to be able to see the future.
  • EMPUSAS - (Greek) Attendant spirits of the dark goddess Hekate (the dark aspect of the moon, a goddess of the underworld). They seem to have had the torsos of women and the bodies of asses, and they would hide their animal bodies in thick underbrush and use their female tops to lure men to their doom (sounds a bit like the Lamia, actually...) Nowadays, an Empusa is a kind of insect, a mantid.
  • ERINYES - (Greek) The Erinyes were the Furies, spirits of the underworld that punished evildoers. They were usually three grey or black women, dripping blood, who flew through the air after their prey. They especially pursed people who murdered family members, such as Prince Orestes of Mycenae, who killed his mother for murdering his father. The Erinyes chased him all over Greece, until the goddess Athena held an impromptu trial of Orestes outside of Athens to establish his guilt. Athena acquitted him, angering the Furies, but the people of Athens promised to erect a shrine to the Erinyes and worship them as protective spirits. This pacified the Erinyes, who were then given the euphemistic name "the Eumenides" - the Kindly Ones.
  • EROS - (Greek) Eros was the naughty son of Aphrodite, the goddess of Love. He served many of the functions of his mother, such as causing people to fall in or out of love. He carried a golden bow and had a quiver full of golden-tipped arrows that caused love, and lead-tipped arrows that caused hatred. He caused way more trouble than he was worth, really...
